Hi, my name is Helen Ridgway and I make sculptural and decorative ceramics as well as a range of functional dishes. Playing with clay is a vehicle for my creativity and way of expressing my thoughts and feelings. A lot of my sculptural and decorative work is conceptual addressing topics that I feel strongly about including social and economic division. I also like making useful platters and bowls, that people might touch and use every day, and reflect my love of sharing food and time with family and friends. Finally there is a range of buttons because let’s face it you can never have too many buttons!

Sculptures

My current sculptural work has grown to be larger and more complex over the last year. The forms are inspired by the intricate shapes and structures of sea organisms and plants some of which can only be seen under a microscope. I am fascinated by the seemingly endless variety and complexity of the creatures and ecosystems that inhabit the underwater world.

Dinnerware for sharing

There’s nothing nicer than sharing food with family and friends. This range of sushi platters was originally designed as a commission for my sister. They were inspired by a trip to Okinawa, Japan and the joy of summer evenings and fresh sushi. But they can be used for all sorts of food!

Pretty as a button

I love buttons of all types, new, vintage and especially handmade. So my range of stoneware and porcelain buttons is born out of obsession. They are perfect for hand knitted or sewn garments, accessories and crafts. A great way to give a new lease of life to a favourite jumper or cardigan.
